NuVu’s Work with Victor Terry and Necessary Means
Beginning in January, NuVu began working with Victor Terry, an incredible facilitator and leader in diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging conversations. Victor has led our school in monthly circle discussions centered around gender, race, belonging, and community. We had the pleasure of sitting down with Victor to learn about their background, expertise, and experience at NuVu thus far!

What do you do?
I am the founder of Necessary Means Consulting and Coaching. We focus on uplifting diversity and belonging in the world.

How did you first get involved in this work?
I have been an activist since high school. Since growing up in Mississippi, I have always been very vocal about injustices, and it’s been something that has carried on into adulthood.

What makes you excited about doing this work with young people in schools?
I really enjoy the unique perspectives that young people bring to conversations and the topics we discuss. The world has changed dramatically since I was a kid. Being able to hear their perspectives is enlightening and shows me how far we have come as a society and shows me how much we still have to do.

What do you hope happens to young people when they start engaging in monthly  Circles?
I hope that they cultivate a sense of belonging and are not afraid to let their voices be heard. I hope they can identify windows and mirrors with each other and walk away from the circles knowing we are not that different from one another.

What do you think is the most important skill for these students to take away?"
Active listening. We have to listen to each other.
Victor is dedicated to fostering community and teaching people–especially young people–to learn from each other and be able to build connections and learn how they are more alike than they are different. They hope that students walk away with a greater sense of self, positive self-concept, and connection with each other.
